Audition, physical and ASVAB required prior to joining.
The audition will be conducted by appointment. Applicants will be auditioned on the following: Prepared solo piece, sight reading, scales and arpeggios.
Applicants who successfully pass their audition will be enlisted into the Massachusetts Air National Guard. You may join the band up to twelve (12) months prior to going to Basic Training at Lackland AFB. All potential candidates must also pass the ASVAB test as well as a physical examination.
Basic Training Information (BMT)
Basic Training is eight (8) weeks in length and is conducted at Lackland Air force Base in San Antonio, Texas. Trainees are paid for six weeks of active duty and are issued a complete set of uniforms. All bandsmen should enter "Band Flight", a Drum & Bugle Corps made up solely of recruits. At Lackland Air Force Base web site you will find a section which covers every aspect of BMT.
After completing BMT, since there is no school of music in the USAF, new recruits have the option of spending six weeks with an active duty band or if you are a current music majors simply continue with their curriculum. Those already with Music Degrees will be addressed on a case by case basis. For any of these options, new members will be paid for six week of active duty.
After Basic Training
New members will "drill" one weekend per month with the Air National Guard Band of the Northeast and go on our annual training tour for two weeks of active duty (usually in the summer). |

Persons interested in joining the Band are always welcome to sit in with us during rehearsals. There is no commitment and no pressure. As a part-time unit that loves music, and being together, we have an extremely high retention rate. It is not unusual for members to Join during their senior year in high school and stay until forced retirement at age 60. (Even when they don't get paid, we still have retirees sit in with us). Members range in age from 18 - 59. |
