Second Lieutenant Steven Ortiz is the commander and conductor of The Air National Guard Band of the Northeast. Under his leadership, the band's various ensembles provide musical support for military ceremonies and functions, and perform for thousands of people each year throughout New England and Eastern New York. Lieutenant Ortiz assumed command in February 2011 and is responsible for all activities, training, and policy of the squadron.

Lieutenant Ortiz was commissioned in December 2010 after completing the Academy of Military Science at Maxwell AFB, AL. Lieutenant Ortiz is a 2005 summa cum laude graduate of Western Connecticut State University and completed graduate studies in Wind Band Conducting at the Hartt School at The University of Hartford. He has taught at the elementary, middle, and high school levels in both public and private schools in Connecticut.

As a trombonist, Lieutenant Ortiz performs regularly in the classical, latin, and jazz genres throughout the Northeast and has performed abroad in Costa Rica and Australia.
